【报告摘要】
Based on a rational-choice political economy framework, this study conceptualizes regulators as self-interested agents and systematically investigates the politics of strategic regulatory information dissemination through social media. Our empirical findings reveal that politician reelection pressure significantly attenuates the SEC’s frequency and likelihood of tweeting about enforcement actions against local constituency firms. This suppressive effect is significantly amplified among politicians exhibiting strong career concerns and possessing greater political capacity. Moreover, the intensity of political influence also varies with a spectrum of mediating conditions, specifically including constituent concerns regarding local economic conditions, the potential political cost associated with voter attribution, and anticipated public reaction to enforcement dissemination. To further validate the underlying mechanism, we demonstrate that tweeting an enforcement action triggers significant negative market reaction, which in turn translates into an elevated probability of subsequent electoral losses for the incumbent politician. Overall, our evidence provides novel insights into the dynamics of regulatory transparency from the dissemination perspective within the political economy framework.
