【报告摘要】
Using a novel dataset on national sentiment around the world, we find that the national sentiment attenuates shareholder activism campaigns proposed by foreign activists, as well as decrease the chances that managers of these firms respond favorably to their foreign activists. Additional results suggest that the effect of national sentiment on foreign shareholder activism is weaker for firms with high level of foreign institutional ownership, stronger for firms headquartered in countries/regions with common law origin, with high level of regulatory quality, with high level of financing capacity in domestic capital market, and for less-professional activists. Finally, we find that national sentiment has no impact on domestic shareholder activism or on domestic institutional ownership. Taken together, our results support the conjecture that the national sentiment works in the firm-level and exhibits as the exclusion to foreign activists and foreign institution ownership.
