Abstract:

Based on China's unique cultural tradition of naming after "De" (Moral), this paper combines identity theory to examine whether CEOs regulate their agency behavior due to the identity generated by names with moral connotations, taking Chinese A-share listed companies from 2003 to 2018 as a sample. The research has found that: (1) Names with moral connotations have a significant regulation effect on CEO agency behavior. The agency cost of companies with CEO names with moral connotations is 3.85% lower than the average level (about 10.96 million yuan), which is stronger when the corporate governance mechanism is not perfect. (2) The regulation effect of names with connotations only exists when the environment in which the CEO's self-identity is formed places a high degree of emphasis on traditional morality, indicating that the above effect is achieved by influencing the CEO's identity. (3) The CEOs’ names with moral connotations can also reduce the expropriation of major shareholders and company violations. This paper introduces the "psychological effect" of names into the field of corporate governance, and studies the impact of CEO names with moral connotations on corporate agency issues. It provides new ideas for identifying individual cultural characteristics, provides evidence for the economic importance of traditional morality, and provides a basis for understanding the micro mechanism and channels of cultural influence on economic decision-making.
